PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY: When Logistics Helps Protect European Nature

Trucks connect Europe. Every day, they cross national borders, transporting goods and raw materials. This connectivity is one of the pillars of the modern economy. At the same time, however, this movement can unintentionally facilitate the spread of something else as well – such as invasive animal species.

One of the current concerns in Europe is the spread of the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), which poses a significant threat to honeybee colonies and, consequently, to ecosystem stability and biodiversity. Its presence across Europe continues to expand, and experts emphasize that early detection and prevention are crucial to limiting its spread.

This is precisely where logistics can play an important role.

Logistics as Part of the Solution

At ZDEMAR, we believe that transportation is about more than simply moving goods from point A to point B. It is also part of an infrastructure that can help protect the environment through which it operates.

That is why we have launched our internal PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY program. Its goal is to raise awareness of invasive species and involve our drivers in a preventive system designed to support the early detection of potential species transfer.

Today, responsible business is no longer defined solely by emissions reduction or fuel efficiency. Increasing emphasis is also being placed on biodiversity protection and the prevention of negative impacts that human activities can have on natural ecosystems. We therefore view the PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY program as part of our long-term commitment to environmental responsibility and our ESG objectives.

The program includes:

  • Driver training focused on identifying the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina)
  • Informational leaflets describing key identification features and clear procedures to follow in the event of a sighting
  • An internal reporting system for potential observations
  • Informational trailer decals carrying the message: “We check our trucks, check yours!”
  • Raising awareness of the issue among European transport companies and customers

Through this initiative, our vehicles become not only part of the logistics network, but also a potential network of observers across Europe.

In cooperation with experts from the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, we aim to contribute to greater awareness and stronger cooperation between the transport sector and nature conservation efforts.

Why We Are Doing This

  1. As part of our ESG strategy, we consider biodiversity protection a natural component of responsible business. Alongside providing safe and reliable transportation services, we want to actively contribute to protecting Europe’s natural environment and preventing risks that may arise from the international movement of people and goods.
  2. We believe that the future of logistics lies not only in transportation efficiency, but also in taking responsibility for the impact our activities may have on society and the environment.
  3. Our goal extends beyond internal prevention. We want to open this discussion across the entire transport sector and demonstrate that logistics can be an active part of the solution to environmental challenges.
  4. The more people working in transport understand what to look for, the greater the likelihood that risks can be identified early—before they have a chance to spread further.

A Challenge for the Entire Sector

Logistics serves as a gateway between countries. For that very reason, it has the potential to help monitor what enters through that gateway.

The issue of invasive species is not only an environmental concern. It is also a matter of responsibility throughout the entire supply chain.

If you work in transport or logistics, it may be worth starting a similar discussion within your own organization.

The “PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY by ZDEMAR” initiative represents a long-term approach to how the transport sector can share responsibility for protecting the environment in which it operates.
